When I ship with FedEx I'm asked if its a residence or not of coarse residents cost more . Is there a way to find out if its a residence or business?

If you do it online there is a box to check for address verification. That will send up an error if you try to send Fedex Ground (business addresses) when it's a residence (Fedex Home Delivery) and vice versa.

i'm not sure that does what you think it does. i may be wrong, but the error you are talking about appears when you've checked the box for residential delivery, but have the delivery option set to fedex ground. Then the red warning appears telling you to change the option to fedex home delivery.

Address verification only checks that the address is valid, and will sometimes come back with minor corrections or alert you that the address doesn't exist.

Fedex (66.06kB)

I could have explained it better. Address verification at Fedex checks the physical address and whether the address is residential or commercial. If one or the other is wrong, it will give you an error page when you try to ship. You can still choose your original choice (e.g. specify the address as commercial when fedex says it's residential and go ahead and ship via Ground) but they can tack on add'l charges if they catch it.

Pic shows example where I specified a commercial address as residential. Same will happen in reverse if you specify residential as commercial.

I prefer to ship everything Ground, it comes out cheaper in the end. First of all Fedex doesn't "catch" all residences and add a surcharge and my Ground discounts are much Higher than Home ones.

I use this site to check residential or commercial. If you're copying and pasting from the order details page, don't forget the comma between city and state because it leaves it out for some reason.
