I shipped a package by FedEx Home Delivery and it was insured for over $220. The package was delivered but the buyer claimed she didn't receive it. I filed a claim and it was denied by FedEx because no signature was required. I disagree with their decision because the package was left in front of an apartment in CA. The driver should not leave a package in front of an apartment. He should reattempt delivery or leave a note for the receiver. Also, there is no prove that it was not misdelivered. I ship 10-20 packages per day. From time to time I receive calls about misdeliveries. I am thinking about shipping by the UPS because the drivers are more professional than the FedEx drivers.

Question - why not require signature for package with value over $200? You do realize that with FedEx all you need to do is to declare value of $500 and signature will be included for free?
As soon as I see the apartment address I email the buyer whether I have to put signature confirmation. Some apartments have a receiving office where they collect packages for customers and those customers will tell you not to include SC.But some apartments don't.In that case I buy SC even though paypal & google checkout require SC only on orders greater than $250.
Also I think the buyers also has to inform sellers if they live in apartments without a receiving office about the situation so sellers can buy SC & avoid this type of situations.
But if claims filed with paypal buyer claim will be denied as there is proof of item delivery. If buyer paid by credit card it is little difficult to win the claim.
Also the buyer has to furnish a police report of item theft inorder to get a refund which is required by some credit card companies also.
FedEx and UPS vary by location/driver so to assume that things will be better is just wishful thinking. I'm pretty sure you're safe provided you sold through eBay and the purchase price was less than $250. I've only once had a buyer say they didn't receive my FedEx shipment and their building manager had it. Either way, item was less than $100 and frankly not my issue per eBay's requirements.
FedEx usually denies claims at first for cases like that, but I've always had them resolved in my favor when I pressed the issue. Just call again and ask to speak to someone higher up. Also, you may want to file a police report for theft and have this when you speak to FedEx. And, yes, for a $220 package I would simply declare it at $500, and pay less than what the additional fee was for $220 value.

really I didn't know that. Rather than paying for direct signature, just insure it for 500 ?
