Where can I find Herman Miller chairs for cheap?

It seems like to me that Herman Miller chairs are rarely discounted and usually do not deviate much from MSRP. Is this true? My father-in-law is possibly interested in the Aeron chair and would rather not dish out the ~$800 they are asking. He's not interested in knock-offs or anything of the such.

I've even thought about refurbs, but I don't see any *deep* discounts -- the quick searches reveal that resellers are asking for $600 for a refurb.

What other options? Possibly an auction for WaMu or Lehman Bros?

Yes, it's pretty much true. I bought my Herman Miller chairs at Room and Board. There may be a couple of slightly cheaper places online.

I checked out some of the dot com closure auctions but they were selling for above retail price. I believe the HM chairs go for about $1000 each at the auctions. People go to those high end auctions hoping to get something and bid the used chairs above retail price. There are rarely deals at those auctions, just stupid people willing to pay above retail price for used junk.

If you're in the SF Bay Area, Interior Motions in Emeryville sells used Herman Miller furniture including Aerons. I can't recall the price but you can email them or call them and ask. I bought 3 fully loaded cubicles for the office plus 2 Equa chairs (formerly yahoo.com furniture) for about the price of one cubicle. LOVE the Equa so much that I bought one for home.

Interior Motions also lists stuff on CL so you can check that way.

there are many options on the aeron and puts their pricing anywhere from $600 - $1000 depending lumbar support, etc.

i love the aeron chair. i think it is a breakthrough design that was way ahead of its time. with that said, there are a few other companies in the same category as herman miller making chairs that are worth looking at. these are all priced in the same range...
