Gift certificates are the most unimaginative but they can be cool to get if it's somewhere you like to shop.
When I was a kid I always hated getting clothes for Christmas. Now I'm an adult and everyone in my family knows my tast so I really dig getting clothes.

I have NEVER gotten a fruitcake as a gift.

a friend of mine and I decided to start giving each other fruitcake for the holidays (the same one, recycled year after year).. then the kids decided I was just playing when I explained after I opened it & wanted to hoard it all to myself, so they cut it up & attempted to eat it (first year of the cycle). To quote one of them "it doesn't taste very nice" Now I have to buy a fruitcake for my friend instead of regifting!

Cash, unless it's a stack of $2 bills.

I don't get it. You're saying that a $2 is something you find unimaginative? My grandparents used to sneak those into gifts from time to time, and us kids always enjoyed getting a $2 bill.

Also, you have to go out of your way (just a bit) to get $2 bills, so it's not like hitting an ATM for $20s to dole out in envelopes for gifts.
