Just curious...my son is 8 (will turn 9 at the end of the year). I have been giving him a gift from 'Santa Claus' every year, and don't know whether I should stop doing so now that he's getting older.

There's a little bit of Santa in all of us, just like the Cap'n.

I remember "confronting" my mother about it when I was nine. I asked her if there was a Santa (I was holding back tears, hoping she'd say 'yes') when she answered truthfully.

My girls found out from their friends/other kids their age around 3rd/4th grade, so I've never had to say anthing to them about it. I do continue to sign gift tags 'Santa' because the spirit of Santa lives at our house.

I've never really understood it. Why teach your kids a myth and have to admit/correct it later? I'm not one of those pastors that preaches Santa is Satan (although if you flip some letters...in fact I tell my boys that some kids believe in Santa and it isn't their place to spoil it.

Santa never brought gifts but only filled the stockings at our house. My oldest son is 25 and if you ask him he will tell you Santa is real. He really lays it on thick when a little kid says there is no Santa. He knows if I ever hear him say otherwise there will be no more stockings. Both of my kids have moved out but they still run to the fireplace to check their stockings when they come over on Christmas morning.

Who is Santa?

Each kid is different. My oldest DS (and also the brainiest) believed until he was 11, middle DS believed until 9, youngest DS was questioning about it at age 6.

My older boys didn't say a thing to me about it and even when I questioned my middle DS about it, he adamantly would *not* give up the belief in Santa - as he insisted there was a Santa he had a huge smirk on his face and said he wasn't dumb - he's believing in Santa so he can keep getting the "good stuff".
Then he told me that this year, could Santa please not give him an educational toy? LOL, last year Santa gave him a Qwest electronic learning game.

The older boys are good - they haven't let on to their little brother. I think they believe that if their little brother tells me that one of them told them that Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy didn't exist - that they wouldn't exist for *all* of them. LOL.

I never believed in Santa. I was an Santa atheist. But then I was also a naughty little boy.

I still get gifts from Santa...at least in my house it was one of those things that was never really 'hammered down' so to speak. Even after I crept down at night and watched my parents putting gifts under the tree, eating the cookies, and messing up the fire place I never said anything to my parents.

So I say, keep it up unless you're confronted by your kid and he tells you to stop, which is unlikely

Santa is part of the magic of Christmas.

I think this is the last yeaar Jr. believes and I'm not even sure that he really does. Think he's keeping up appearances for me. He's my baby-the youngest and last and it makes me kind of sad. Just today, he said he didn't even care if we had a tree this year and it really made me rethink my own attitude about Christmas. He's 9. He may or may not believe in Santa, but he is far to young to have outgrown a tree.

Our older kids tried to convince the then 9-yr. old son that Santa wasn't real, but he told them that they were lying and that if he stopped believing he wouldn't get any presents.

He told me a few days ago he knew that Santa was real and that I would get better gifts if I believed it, too. Silly boy!

ITA. Children should be able to trust their parents to not lie to them.

I'm pretty sure that my 8 yr. old deep-down knows that mom and dad are Santa. But she won't admit it. I suspect that she thinks that if she admits it that she won't get the gifts from "Santa" anymore.

A couple of weeks ago she lost a tooth late at night. I had fallen asleep on the couch watching TV and she came in to tell me. Obviously I didn't wake up because I had no memory of it the next morning....and her tooth was still under her pillow. I told her that there was a secret I needed to tell her and she immediately said "No! I don't want to hear it!". LOL

So then I told her the tooth fairly probably couldn't go to the bank that day since it was a holiday that day (Veteran's day) and the bank's were closed.

She went with it. I *know* she knows!!! But she's not letting on. Smart girl because the tooth fairy left her $10 for forgetting.
