First of all its 120Hz not 120Mhz. Second this is only useful for broadcast TV as very few set-top boxes for satelite/cable/bluray/dvd/etc will not support hdmi 1.3 which has the bandwidth capable of 1080p@120Hz as hdmi 1.0 does not.

Okay, I just read that 3 times, but got confused. We're looking at 120hz, but still learning. If I read that right, you're saying broadcast does not support hdmi 3.1, but the others do?

What I am saying is that there are not that many set-top boxes which support hdmi 1.3 (bluray/dvd/sat/cable/etc). They exist they just aren't super common.

Unless the device supports hdmi 1.3 the 120Hz gets you nothing when using these devices.

120Hz is advantageous for broadcast TV due to the fact that you aren't getting the signal from any type of set top box and it is handled by the TV's built-in decoder. Due to this there is really no reason it shouldn't be refreshing at 120 Hz when it is getting data internally its just the external devices which have problems. 120Hz is nice to have if the tv just has it but I would not pay more than $50-$100 for a TV that could do 120Hz vs 60Hz as it kind of a gimmick until everything out there supports hdmi 1.3.

I would be using a TV hooked up to a computer and good luck finding a computer video card which supports hdmi 1.3 (they probably exist but I don't know of any).

Is HDMI 1.3 really necessary?

It's an old article so I have to ask is it still relevant? We can't get that promised 16-bit color because Blu-Ray discs and every other source is at most 8-bit.

I beg to differ. Your input signal doesn't have to be 120Hz to achieve a subjectively better overall picture by the TV refreshing at 120Hz. The high end TVs that support 120Hz allow you to control the way the output is generated from the 60Hz (720p) or 30Hz (1080i deinterlaced to 1080p) input of broadcast TV. The TV's video processor can either just repeat frames OR it can use interpolation to create intermediate frames from the broadcast frames. The addition of the synthetic interpolated frames makes fast motion look smoother on these TVs and brings a more life like quality to the video. I know at least on the Samsung and Sony models, you can tune how much interpolation is done. It's like watching a live theater play up close versus watching a movie. Some people hate the added realism effect this produces and others love it. That's why the good TVs let you switch it off it you want.

If you don't believe me go to Best Buy or Circuit City and stare at the Sony and Samsung 120Hz display models. They often have them sitting next to the non 120Hz ones or doing the splitscreen demo. They way they implement the 120Hz really makes a difference for any good HD input source.

Also, for Blu-ray, 120Hz is even more helpful. Most Blu-ray movies are shot at 24Hz. If you only have a 60Hz LCD, then the conversion from 24Hz to 60Hz will cause artificial jerkiness called jutter most visible when the camera slow pans (60/24 = 2.5). The good news is that for most people, they are so used to TV and DVD that the jutter seems normal to them. On a 120Hz set, the conversion is done as an exact multiple of frames (120/24 = 5) which eliminates the jutter and makes motion smoother. Again, some people cannot tell the difference. But if you're one of the people who knows what to look for because someone showed it to you, it will bother you.

Now I'm not saying the added differences are worth the extra money you'll pay for a 120Hz set, but there definitely is benefit for some in the technology. Again, some people just hate the way video looks when you crank up the 120Hz interpolation. Those people should definitely just save their money and buy a 60Hz set. But if you like the way 120Hz looks, by all means go out and buy yourself a 120Hz set.

The point is, don't take anyone's word for it. Go out and look at the different models and make the decision for yourself. Don't just buy into what someone is saying about 120Hz/1080p being necessary or not necessary.
