Why was Onion banned? I can't think of anyone still on FW who's contributed more deals. His criticisms are sharp, but they are usually spot on. |

This is a difficult subject, since we don't discuss the actions we take on other accounts openly. Speaking in general terms, though: There's a point where you can lose sight of the function of criticism and simply wind up becoming a drag on everything and everyone. Everyone's opinion matters, but nobody wants to hear it over, and over, and over, and over, and over. There's a point where you've gotta say "Ok, I think they got my message," then decide whether you want to move on or move out. In very rare circumstances we'll help facilitate that decision. We allow some pretty harsh criticism to go unchecked because we think we're capable of handling it, and in some cases it's well-deserved. No one should fear posting an opinion, even if it's unpopular. However, throwing months-long tantrums and being deliberately unhelpful or downright useless is not acceptable in any forum, except maybe unmoderated usenet groups. General examples aside, I like Onion well enough, and certainly appreciate the huge amounts of effort he set forth in the past. It would be a shame to never see him again. :/ |

On the subject of the vegetable, I have to admit I was surprised at the amount of negativity you tolerated. You were more than fair than him, but his posts went from untactfully pointing things out to just plain rude. Maybe this can be a wake-up call to the community that if you want to help move things in a positive direction, you attract more flies with honey. |

As airtommy said, he was frequently spot on. However, it was hard to hear him through all the noise, and if he became a drag on the community... Edit to add: re-thinking my last statement based on additional info below. I was unaware of most comments outside FW forum, and certainly respect the sentiments expressed by people in this thread. |

I have read hundreds of posts by Onion. I can recall one of those posts contributing something useful in a constructive manner. I'm not sad to see him gone, if indeed he will stay gone. An attention-seeking troll like that doesn't make this a better website. I was surprised and rather disappointed with the FW staff for not kicking him off the site permanently for the "man-up" comment. |
