I know there was a previous thread but it was based on trying to find specific items.
I have been doing the 0.01 cent items for some time now and usually pick something up every time I go into Home Depot.
When looking at the tags you will see a date in the bottom left which I believe is the purchase date. (I'm not sure on this.)
The thing that I have learned is if this date is one year old ie: 01/10/08 would be at 0.01 now. The only time this hasn't been true is on some higher ticket items.(This is the exception and not the rule.)
Usually these items are ones that are forgot about and haven't been thrown away yet. Look for overstock areas and stuff that is out of place. The sloppier the store the better the finds.
I have purchased everything from a closet organizer, faucets, sinks, tea light lamps.
1. Always use self check out and do a price check prior to purchase.
2. When purchasing these items if confronted they will usually sell you the one item at 0.01 but if you have multiple items they will take them away(YMMV).
3. Always purchase other items usually items that have a higher cost that can be returned later unless needed.
Happy hunting I will start updating items I have purchased so you might be able to keep an eye out.

FAQ! 1. Where to look? Most stores have the stuff on end caps with clearance signs big yellow ones. Also look for yellow tags on items this will either be clearance or an ad item. Some stores here (Colorado) Have aisles dedicated to clearance items. Also I do walk most of the aisle's to see what there is. I have about 5 Home Depot's I consistently visit which gives a nice variety.
2. Other post people talk about? Here is a link to the previous post that started it all. Previous Post
0.01 FINDS `Delta Model #35925 Vessona Venetian Chrome Bathroom 3-Hole Bathroom Faucet is discontinued and therefore $0.01. I don't know what the SKU is because I have already given them away.
`I bought 10 packs of 8 sheet metal screws for 1cent apiece at HD.
`Two days ago the wife and I went to HD and were looking at outdoor table umbrellas that were in a display with big signs showing prices of $39 and $59. I pulled out a sturdy looking brown umbrella and checked the yellow tag for the price. $124.95!!! I asked to sales guy if this was $39 or $59 or $124. He scanned it, Clearance $0.01.

Interesting...I'll have to start trying this out...thx OP!
but how do you find items with tags for specific dates? do you just go through every aisle until you find something that matches that date a year before?

I was a vendor for Home Depot for five years and I assure you this is not entirely accurate.
The date on the tag is usually the date that the price tag was printed. This is not always the case. Sometimes the date will be in the future and will indicate the date that the item goes off of ad. There may be other nuances as well.
Many price labels are placed by vendors, not Home Depot associates. To save time (there are only so many of those little price label carts) vendors will often print multiple labels at one store to use at other stores that they call on.
There are items sold at Home Depot that have been active items for at least eight years (when I started working as a vendor) that are still sold today. A store that has not refreshed a bay, endcap, or display may have price labels dated 2001 (or earlier). They are not $.01.
This may work for clearance (yellow tag) items that are over one year old.
Save yourself time and effort and don't bother asking for price checks on every item with a tag printed 12 months ago.

Hi everyone, I've bought many items from clearance, however, I have never been so lucky to have something ring up $.01. Is there a written store policy or something that we could refer to?

This is just a guide to hopefully find these rare gems. I was also a vendor for HD but in a different capacity. I would get sick always seeing perfectly good items being tossed in the compactor. By finding a way to get these deals hey I'm ready for the hunt! That is the thrill of it getting something brand new that was once $200.00~! =)

I only know what managers have told me but some stores are different than other stores.
I bought two lights for $1 each, the original price was $40 each and they still had them in stock. Man, $0.01, I hope I can find something at that price next time.
