Most allowance efforts have the unintended consequence of teaching kids to spend and consume (“here’s some money for the week, or the month—you decide what to spend it on’). This is not a learning experience; it’s a way to get those ‘can I, can I’ kids off your back!  We hope by transferring some cash to their pocket we’ll get a little respite from their endless please for ‘stuff’ and that, in the process, we’ll help them develop economic judgment.

While many of our friends are planning trips to the beach and Disney World, we’re planning more of a “staycation summer” at our house because we’re trying to save money to take that first big Disney World trip next summer. We will indeed spend plenty of time at our cabin in Wisconsin like we do every year, but we’re hoping to do other fun things with our boys as well.
