Sometimes I wish there was such a thing as a support group for those of us who make stupid coupon shopping mistakes. It would have to be anonymous though, to accomodate those of us who work at deal sites (not naming any names), and even though we they eat sleep and breathe deals 8-10 hours a day, still make dumb deal hunting horrors a frequent occurrence.

“Are warehouse memberships worth it?” I explored this question several weeks ago, right here on FatWallet.com. I asked scores of coupon queens and regular people if they belonged to a warehouse club – such as Sam’s, BJ’s, and Costco – and if so, why they thought the membership was worth it to them. Researching that blog post really got me thinking that I needed to give my local Sam’s Club another try, which is exactly what I did.

Kroger shocked the couponing world by stopping their long-time practice of unlimited double coupons in their headquarter city of Cincinnati this month. I’m sure I heard the collective cry of “Noooooo!” from couponers across the region! Now, this may not be the case for your particular region or store… yet. I do think that many other grocery stores all over the country will be following suit very soon.

The use of coupons is a win-win situation that should benefit all participants. They are an excellent marketing tool for manufacturers and retailers, and offer great savings for consumers. Unfortunately, as with anything of actual worth, coupons are susceptible to misuse and fraud. With the recent rise in popularity of coupons, law officials and businesses are having a tough time staying ahead of the offenders. Growing demand combined with tech-savvy criminals creates the perfect storm for illicit activity, and makes things more difficult for honest couponers.
